Shot/weights explained & Pole float shoting guide

Fishing shot has come a long way from the original lead shot which was banned in 1987. There are now different sizes, colours, and shapes of shot currently available in the UK today. Below i have listed the main ones and a brief description of each.

Split shot – This is the most commonly used type of shot is the split shot; this is available in sizes from a tiny No13 right up to the larger 3SSG. Split shot is available in different colours to aid as camouflage when in the water, some companies also double cut there shot to allow the shot to be removed easily and re-used.
Styl’s – This is another type of shot, these are not used as readily as split shot but still have there place in anglers tackle boxes. The shot is itself is a thin elongated and rounded type of shot with a central split running along its length. This type of shot is used more so by anglers on the continent and match anglers in this control who want to achieve a delicate set up when pole fishing. Styls are only available in 5 sizes, No7-No11’s

Stotz – This is the newcomer, Stotz where original introduced into the market in 2007 by Preston innovations and are already at home in most anglers tackle boxes with some using them as a replacement for there split shot completely. Stotz look like a fatter and more rounded version of a styl and are sold in sizes No8 – No11. Commercial match anglers rate this as the shot to use on there commercial pole rigs, the reason why is that due to there increased surface area they are less likely to ‘ping’ of the line like traditional split shot.

Eggs – This is also a fairly new invention in the shot world, created by Dinsmores (split shot specialists). This is very similar to split shot but in an egg shape.
